Compliance deadline

ESOS Phase 4 reporting is due by 5 December 2027.

If your organisation employs 250 or more people, or turns over more than £44m with a balance sheet above £38m, you are in scope and the clock is already running. There are two routes to compliance: an ESOS energy audit, or ISO 50001 certification. We deliver both, as a registered ESOS Lead Assessor.

Enforcement is real. Phase 3 fines have already passed £3.9 million on Environment Agency figures, and assessor capacity tightens as every deadline approaches. Starting early costs less and risks nothing.

Two routes to ESOS compliance

ESOS energy audit or ISO 50001 certification: which route fits?

Both routes satisfy ESOS Phase 4 and both still need a notification to the Environment Agency. They differ in effort, cost and what you are left with afterwards.

Does ESOS apply to my organisation?

ESOS Phase 4 applies to UK organisations with 250 or more employees, or with turnover above £44 million and a balance sheet above £38 million. If you meet the threshold on the qualification date of 31 December 2026, you are in scope.

When is the Phase 4 deadline?

Compliance must be notified by 5 December 2027. Assessor capacity tightens as every deadline approaches, so starting early costs less and risks nothing.

Can ISO 50001 certification replace an ESOS audit?

Yes. A certified ISO 50001 energy management system that covers your energy use is an accepted route to ESOS compliance. You still need to notify the Environment Agency. The table above sets out how the two routes differ.

What does an ESOS assessment cover?

The energy used by your buildings, industrial processes and transport. We scope it, collect the data, audit the sites, produce costed savings recommendations and, as a registered Lead Assessor, review and sign off the assessment before notification.

What is SECR and does it apply to us?

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting requires large UK companies to report their energy use, carbon emissions, an intensity ratio and an energy efficiency narrative in the annual directors’ report. If you are in scope, we produce the numbers, the methodology and the narrative.

What happens after the audit?

Nothing is saved until the recommendations are put into practice. That is where the work that actually pays happens: turning the report into costed projects, and keeping the evidence current with an annual audit until the next cycle.

What is an ESOS Lead Assessor?

An ESOS Lead Assessor is an energy professional on one of the registers approved for the scheme, and every ESOS assessment must be reviewed and signed off by one before it is notified. We are registered through the Energy Managers Association, so the assessment and the sign-off come from the same person.

What does an ESOS assessment cost?

It depends on how many sites you have and how complex your energy use is. After a 20-minute call we give you a clear price for the whole assessment, from scoping to notification, before any work starts.
